I am no longer providing tree service. I have fully transitioned to lumber milling only.

SERVICES

CUSTOM MILLING

We mill large live edge slabs and dimensional lumber from reclaimed wood.  This is wood harvested from tree service companies.

PICKUP & DELIVERY

I can pickup your logs for a fee and deliver your lumber as well.  Prices vary depending on numerous variables.  We are only 5 minutes from the Lynchburg Airport and are not out of the way for most tree service companies, as it may be an option to have them deliver it.

RECENT WORK

Slippery elm

Slippery elm

Slipper elm is our most popular wood, even more so than black walnut. This was finished with a clear epoxy.

Dimensional Lumber

Dimensional Lumber

Although this is not our focus we can definitely accommodate dimensional lumber requests.

Black Walnut book match

Black Walnut book match

A book match is two slabs set side by side with an identical image. This is the most common method for making the popular farm tables.

Unique black walnut

Unique black walnut

Every cut is unique and offers a one of kind look.

Book match maple

Book match maple

These book match maple pieces are without a doubt one of a kind.

Poplar boards

Poplar boards

These poplar boards house our wood splitter and were finished with Cabot's Timber Oil.

Wide white oak

Wide white oak

This one piece is big enough to be a table and was completed using the Alaskan Sawmill.

Card table?

Card table?

At least that's what I thought it would best be used for.

TimberKing 2500

TimberKing 2500

The TimberKing 2500 is one of the largest portable sawmills made in America. We are committed to making the best use of God's resources. Trees this big should be reclaimed for future generations and not just used for firewood, or worse, left to rot.

One piece door

One piece door

A massive tulip poplar log was cut in such a way to produce a one piece bathroom door.

Poplar slabs

Poplar slabs

These poplar slabs are approximately 2.5' wide and and nearly 10' long.

Black walnut slab

Black walnut slab

A black walnut tree fell over on Sweet Briar College next to Thayer Field. This slab came from one of the few salvageable logs.

Alaskan Sawmill

Alaskan Sawmill

For logs bigger than 39" we can cut them with our Alaskan Sawmill or reduce them in size to fit on the Timberking 2500.

Alaskan Sawmill

Alaskan Sawmill

This is an 880 Stihl running a 5ft bar attached to an Alaskan Sawmill (actual cut throat 4.5'). This Maple trunk was partially rotted and would have been rejected by a traditional mill. Oh well, their loss.

Maple slab

Maple slab

This 8ft x 3.5ft one piece Maple slab is one of a kind and came from a rotting trunk. To think something this beautiful could be inside such a disfigured piece of wood is a reminder of God's beauty placed inside each and everyone of us.

4 ft wide Oak slabs

4 ft wide Oak slabs

This very piece was used as the top to the vanity in our bathroom as shown in the next picture.

Live edge Oak counter top

This counter top can be seen after being cut in the previous picture. This slab is shown without any treatment added to it.

Slabs make great signs

My wife used her stencil machine to paint this slab as a sign.

ABOUT THE WOODSMAN

I graduated from the State University of New York, College of Environmental Science and Forestry with a B.S. in Forest Engineering (1998).  Responding to a life-long desire to serve in the military I made a radical decision and enlisted in the USMC as an Infantryman.  10 days after graduating college I found myself on the historic yellow footprints at Parris Island, SC.  After 15 years of active duty and being promoted to a desk I elected to take the Marine Corps up on a rare, but timely, opportunity to retire early as a Major in 2013.

Jesus became real to me in 2008 and radically changed my heart.  This business is a culmination of the various passions he wove within me.  I love the outdoors, physical activity, problem-solving, physics, and serving the needs of others.  Outside of spending time with my wife and three children, there is no other thing I would rather be doing.  To work as a steward of God's magnificent creation is a privilege that brings me great joy.

The Woodsman started out as a tree service business.  However, after attending an urban wood use conference in 2016 I caught the milling bug.  Soon after I invested in an Alaskan Chainsaw Mill and a very inexpensive, small, manual bandsaw mill.  The results were awesome, but the process was painfully slow.  With the size of the trees I was taking down and considering the sheer volume of wood I was dealing with I invested in the Timberking 2500.

Over time I transitioned out of the tree service business in order to focus on milling and the development of our Agribusiness.
